1.1 THE ROOT OF EVERYTHING
THE INFINITE DIVERSITY OF CELLS
Fitness for purpose is the essence of all beauty.
The world of microscopic, single-celled organisms is no less diverse and complex than the visible realms of life. Bacteria, archaea, protists – each group exhibits a distinct molecular structure, biochemistry, and physiology. Yet, they remain intricately interconnected, engaging in symbiosis and exchanging metabolic products.
Single-celled organisms display an immense variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from a mere 0.3 micrometres in certain bacteria to an astonishing 20 centimetres in deep-sea xenophyophores. The vast majority of these unicellular organisms are completely invisible to the human eye.
We invite you to appreciate the artistry of photomicrography and immerse yourself in the striking beauty of the microscopic world.
