LAWS AND PRINCIPLES
Over 250,000 accepted marine species are documented in the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). The database is continuously updated, refining taxonomic names and classifications while incorporating newly discovered species.
Scientists describe approximately 2,000 new marine species annually. In 2025 alone, 2,600 newly described marine species were added, encompassing both extant and fossil forms.
Spanning an immense area of 360,000,000 km² with an average depth of 3,682 meters, the World Ocean represents the largest habitable space on our planet.
The ocean floor covers more than half of the Earth’s surface, making it the single largest continuous habitat on the planet.
